Coming Back to the Creative Process Using Visualization
Stepping into creativity doesn’t always flow naturally. There’s rhythms, a dance you do to keep up with your inner thoughts. How do you come back to the practice with confidence, inspiration? One of my favorite tools is visualization.
Coming Back to the Creative Process Using Visualization
Visualization warms up your mind to prepare for the creative process. It allows for a little bit of space before diving headfirst into your practice. It helps remove any negativity and enter your practice with clarity. Use this tool after long pauses in the creative practice, or daily.
How to Practice Visualization Before Creating
The practice of visualization doesn’t have to start right before your creative practice. You can use this tool a few days before, the night before, or five minutes prior.
Close your eyes and begin to envision the perfect creative session. Answer these questions and visualize yourself in your practice.
You walk into your space—what does it look like? How does it feel? What do you smell? Is the window open or closed, is there music on in the background, if so what’s playing?
Your supplies are waiting for you—what materials are out, how do they feel, what excites you most about them?
Envision your physical self as well as your mental self—what do you look like as you begin to create, what motions are you going through, what are you thinking, what inspiration are you looking at?
Dig for details. Really lean into visualizing the process and how you feel. Visualizing your creative practice will help wake your senses. Use it to move back into your creative studio with grace. It often takes a few movements to wake muscle memory, but it’s always there waiting for you to return.
