How Earth Pigments Transform Your Creative Practice

The earth pigment process is full of discovery and the act is quite transformative. It influences the way you perceive the world and move throughout your creative practice. This topic is so dear to me, and while writing is a big part of my creative process, I also enjoy sharing creative conversations. Today, I am bringing you something that is a bit more personal—a true and honest dialogue. In the above audio recording, I give three ways earth pigments inspire a deeper connection with our outer landscapes, our inner landscapes, and our creative practice. Below are written notes from the recording for you to reflect upon, and explore deeper.

How Earth Pigments Transform Your Creative Practice

how earth pigments transform the creative practice

Earth pigments are full of discovery and investigation. As you work, you explore both your outer landscapes [the environment around you] and your inner landscapes [the way you perceive the world]. Through the earth pigment process, both these understandings come together and blossom into moments of profoundness, connectedness. You get to touch, feel, and experience the earth, while your body is moving through a very physical and present process. It builds heightened awareness and engages your senses.

When you suddenly become engaged and attuned to your outer and inner landscapes, you learn to approach your creative practice with both confidence and reverence. This process can be a little overwhelming because you’re trying to build an understanding of how to construct a suitable material—and there are a lot of variables. But, when you play and discover rocks that turn into painting, drawing, or inking materials, you begin to build reliance. This moment brings reverence because you understand the nuances of your materials, what makes them unique, and the abundant gifts from the earth.

As you move closer to your outer and inner landscapes, and you find confidence and reverence, you are building a foundation for your creative vocabulary. Your creative vocabulary is what grounds your work, helps build your style, and informs how you talk about your work. The earth pigment process does this in a big way. You connect with the original source of your material, you understand why iron oxide is suitable for artist materials, you identify the many different stages of the art-making process, and you learn the language for how mediums are created. All of these new learnings are new words you can explore, think about, and have conversations about. You begin to build deep layers about your process. This work brings so much clarity, and when you have the clarity you have an abundance. When you have abundance, you have an unlimited resource of inspiration.

If you highly enjoy thinking about related topics and connecting to the earth pigment process, I am sharing a free workshop series beginning on March 4! The workshop series will be a natural progression from the free earth pigment guidebook I offer—The Deeply Mindful Process of Earth Pigments. It will inspire many thought-provoking topics following this one and offer a clear path for how you can continue to encourage a deeper connection to the earth pigment process. It is my hope to bring you clarity and abundance to your creative practice.
